Duct Free Mini-Split

Indoor Evaporating Unit (Greenhalgh, 2022)

Ductless Mini-split Systems generally have large, upfront costs. They are intended for specific applications where ordinary ductwork is unattainable or not worth the installation. Mini-split systems offer independent control that is important for rooms with outlier temperatures from the rest of a building. This is a very popular option in small isolated areas such as electrical equipment rooms that can get very hot or small hotel rooms where individual control is needed at each room. Consider that the heating components of mini-splits are less effective in colder climates, so additional heating methods might still be necessary in some areas.

Outdoor Compressor and Condenser Unit (Greenhalgh, 2022)

The national average cost of a mini-split system is $3,000 with a large typical range between $2,000 to $14,500 (Greenhalgh, 2022). Factors that attribute to the cost of installing a mini-split system include unit size, mounting location of indoor unit, location of the room, labor, permits, thermostats and other additional accessories. Different brands are more efficient (SEER Rating) with high endurance that also attribute to higher costs. Wall mounted indoor units can range from $400 to $1000 while ceiling mounted units can cost up to $2000. Additionally, multiple indoor units can be installed and connected to a single outdoor unit (Multi-Zone mini-split system).

Although the cost of installing multiple mini splits can add up, energy costs and consumption can be brought down for the following reasons:

  • Addition of zoning capabilities means energy isn't wasted on rooms that do not need heating or cooling, only using energy on occupied rooms
  • Avoids energy loss due to ductwork due to leaking along corners and joints.
  • Smaller components and system more suitable for smaller areas where a larger unit would be unnecessary. Less material, labor, and space is needed.
